Isle of Wight now broadcasts emergency alerts on Twitter

ISLE OF WIGHT — The county’s department of emergency services has jumped on the Twitter bandwagon.

At twitter.com/iowdes, people can learn about events ranging from vehicle accident notifications to house fires or severe weather alerts. The idea came from a Virginia Tech student who was interning last summer with the Isle of Wight Department of Emergency Services.

“We’ve had Twitter in Isle of Wight for a little while now,” said Rusty Chase, the county’s emergency services director. “It’s a good tool and I think it can be worthwhile.”
