The Economic Development Department kicked off a new business seminar series called “Monday Matters” on January 25th.   These business seminars will be held on the 4th Monday of each month and will alternate between general business topics such as financing and marketing and green topics about how to make your business more environmentally friendly. 

Our first seminar topic was “International Paper & You” featuring speakers from the International Paper Economic Recovery Team’s Subcommittees – Economic Development, Workforce, Small Business and Forestry.  Attendance exceeded our expectations, and in the coming weeks, we will be posting highlights from each of the speakers and maybe some feedback from attendees as well.

The February 22nd Seminar topic is “Green Ideas for your Business.”  Stay tuned for more information.

ISLE OF WIGHT — The county’s department of emergency services has jumped on the Twitter bandwagon.

At twitter.com/iowdes, people can learn about events ranging from vehicle accident notifications to house fires or severe weather alerts. The idea came from a Virginia Tech student who was interning last summer with the Isle of Wight Department of Emergency Services.

“We’ve had Twitter in Isle of Wight for a little while now,” said Rusty Chase, the county’s emergency services director. “It’s a good tool and I think it can be worthwhile.”
