Isle of Wight County has a civilian labor force of over 18,800. The County is part of the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which includes the cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Franklin, and several other cities and counties. These localities add over 800,000 citizens available for employment with businesses located in the County.

Additionally, the U.S. military has a strong presence in Hampton Roads. There are more than 13,000 exiting military personnel and over 30,000 members of our region’s workforce are spouses of military personnel. These individuals represent a highly trained and disciplined workforce.

Isle of Wight County works closely with Opportunity Inc., a regional workforce development group. Opportunity Inc. maintains comprehensive labor market data, links to regional and national databases and other valuable labor market resources. This includes occupational information, employment and unemployment rates, wage data, education levels, training providers and other key statistics and demographics.

Numerous facilities in Hampton Roads offer specialized training for employees throughout the Region. These workforce development centers have pre-selected programs and can design company-specific training for local employers.
