Coffee, Conversation and Inspiration
When Chemerre Wells got the keys to her retail storefront in Carrollton in March 2020, she didn’t know that her journey to open a coffee shop and café would be delayed by a pandemic.
The dream began “many moons ago” as a wine bar/restaurant and 54 was the number of wines Wells planned to sell. Fast forward to two years ago when her husband asked if she still had the dream. At that time, the couple was involved in the specialty coffee scene, so the dream became a coffee bar and café – 54 Beans. The Carrollton couple realized there was a need for a local coffee shop. After looking in nearby communities, Wells says “the location at Eagle Harbor Shopping Center literally fell in my lap!”
Wells, who was a Government Subcontracts Administrator for 15 years, began training to become a Barista. She partnered with Canvas Coffee House in Newport News to design her own personal blend “The 54”, which is the house coffee. 54 Beans also uses Canvas Coffee’s Espresso blend, cold brew blend and featured single origins.
54 Beans opened on March 19, 2021. Wells describes her business as a third wave coffee shop offering specialty coffees and teas. Third wave shops focus on the experience, consumer education and service. They highlight the sweetness and flavor of each coffee with minimal additives. “Most people have no idea of all coffee has to offer and they load it up with creams, flavors & sugar. Coffee is agricultural and much like wine. Depending on the region where it’s grown, the processing method, brewing method, etc. coffee can be enjoyed like a glass of fine wine!”
54 Beans has also partnered with the Smithfield Gourmet Bakery so patrons can enjoy muffins, cookies, cakes and croissants along with their coffee.
One look at the giant chalkboard “Inspire” wall, the art gallery wall and the comfy furniture lets you know Wells has achieved her vision of creating an environment of peace, that promotes encouragement and inspires people on their daily journey.
